Boston Marriott Newton, Newton, Mass

Please join us at MACDL's, Annual Winter Meeting on Wednesday March 12, 2013 from 530 to 9 PM at the Newton Marriott Hotel, 2345 Commonwealth Ave., in Newton, Massachusetts.

The program will include:

Keynote Speaker: Jonathan Rapping, President and Founder of Gideon's Promise

In addition to his work with Gideon's Promise (formerly the Southern Public Defender Training Center ), Jon teaches criminal law and procedure at Atlanta's  John Marshall School of Law and is a lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School. He was formerly training director for the DC Public Defender Service, for the newly established Georgia statewide public defender system, and for the New Orleans Public Defenders. In 2013 Jon and Gideon's Promise were given awards by the Southern Center for Human Rights and the National Association Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists.

Gideon Award: John Salsberg

We will be presenting the Gideon award to John Salsberg in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the principle that all persons shall stand equal before the law. John started his career as a trial lawyer at the Massachusetts defenders committee, cofounded the Suffolk Lawyers for Justice (the Suffolk Bar Association program) in 2001. He served as its co-chair for 12 years and now serves as Chair of the Criminal Justice Act Board for the United States District Court of Massachusetts. John has devoted countless hours to SLJ and now to the CJA board while providing zealous representation to his many clients, teaching as a clinical instructor at Harvard defenders, lecturing and training and CLE programs.

Presidents Award for Public Service: Susan Mellen

We will also be honoring Susan Mellen, recently retired after almost 30 years at the Supreme Judicial Court - the last 14 of which were as Clerk of the Court. Any one of us has ever had a matter before the court knows precisely why we make this award: Susan Mellon defines what the phrase public service truly means.
